Fluoride toothpaste: what the research says
Toothpaste with 1,000–1,500 ppm fluoride reduces tooth decay compared with non-fluoride toothpaste; for young children, the fluoride concentration should be balanced against the risk of fluorosis (Cochrane review, 2019). Ask the dentist which toothpaste suits your child's age.
Sugar and tooth decay
WHO recommends keeping free sugars below 10% of total energy, and ideally below 5% (about 25 g, or 6 teaspoons, a day), partly to reduce tooth decay (WHO guideline, 2015). Limit sugary snacks and drinks between meals, and don't put a baby to sleep with a bottle of milk or juice.
