Mouth ulcer not healing: when should it be checked?

Reviewed by Dr. Rekha Pandey, BDS (NMC 38136) · Last updated: 25 Oct 2026

Short answer

A mouth ulcer that lasts more than 3 weeks, a red or white patch, a lump, or mouth pain that does not go away should be checked by a dentist or doctor (NHS: symptoms of mouth cancer). Having one of these signs does not definitely mean you have cancer, but it is important to get checked. At Kashyap Dental & Aesthetics in Butwal, Dr. Rekha Pandey (BDS) does oral cancer screening; see all dental prices in Butwal.

Which signs should be checked?

The NHS lists these among the symptoms of mouth cancer (NHS: symptoms of mouth cancer):

  • A mouth ulcer that lasts more than 3 weeks
  • A red or white patch inside the mouth
  • A lump inside the mouth or on the lip
  • Pain inside the mouth that does not go away

Who is at higher risk?

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (WHO) classifies betel quid, with or without tobacco, and areca nut as carcinogenic to humans (IARC, WHO 2003). Chewing gutkha, khaini, surti, paan or supari, and smoking, raise the risk of oral cancer (WHO oral health fact sheet); see gutkha, khaini and oral cancer.

What happens at a mouth check?

A visual and touch examination of your mouth, tongue and gums, done in a few minutes during any dental visit, with no needles or cutting. If we find a suspicious area, we explain what it means and arrange further tests or a specialist referral.
