Knocked-out tooth: what to do right now

Reviewed by Dr. Rekha Pandey, BDS (NMC 38136) · Last updated: 25 Oct 2026

Short answer

If an adult (permanent) tooth is knocked out, hold it by the crown, rinse it briefly in milk, saline or saliva if it is dirty, put it back in the socket or keep it in milk, and come to a dentist immediately (IADT guidelines, 2020). Never put a milk (baby) tooth back in. Kashyap Dental & Aesthetics in Butwal is open 7 days a week, 8 AM–6 PM; see emergency dentist in Butwal and dental prices in Butwal.

Step by step for an adult tooth

  1. Hold the tooth by the crown (the white part), not the root
  2. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly in milk, saline or saliva
  3. Put it back in the socket straight away, or keep it in milk
  4. Don't let the tooth dry out
  5. Come to the clinic immediately

What about a child's milk tooth?

Never put a milk (baby) tooth back in (IADT guidelines, 2020). Bring your child to the dentist so the mouth and the other teeth can be checked; see children's dentistry in Butwal.

What if the tooth is broken, not knocked out?

Keep any pieces, rinse your mouth and come in the same day.
