# Root canal or extraction: save the tooth or take it out?

**Short answer:** Keeping your natural tooth is usually better for chewing and for the neighbouring teeth; extraction may be needed if the tooth cannot be saved. ## What does the research say?

Root canal treatment: in pooled studies from 2003–2020, primary root canal treatment succeeded in 82% of cases by strict X-ray criteria and 92.6% by looser criteria ([Burns et al., Int Endod J 2022](https://doi.org/10.1111/iej.13736)). Implants, if the tooth is replaced: a 2019 meta-analysis found about 96% of implants were still in place after 10 years (about 93% when patients lost to follow-up were accounted for) ([Howe et al., J Dent 2019](https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jdent.2019.03.008)).
