# Why do my gums bleed when I brush?

**Short answer:** Gums usually bleed when brushing because of gum inflammation (gingivitis), often caused by plaque build-up and made worse by tobacco. It is common and usually reversible with professional cleaning and better daily brushing, but it should be checked. ## Why do gums bleed?

Plaque that is not removed by brushing and cleaning between the teeth builds up and irritates the gums, so they become red, swollen and bleed. Tobacco makes gum disease worse.
