## Knocked-out tooth: what to do before you arrive

For an adult (permanent) tooth, the International Association of Dental Traumatology advises ([IADT guidelines, 2020](https://doi.org/10.1111/edt.12573)):

- Hold the tooth by the crown (the white part), not the root
- If it is dirty, rinse it briefly in milk, saline or saliva
- Put it back in the socket straight away, or keep it in milk
- Don't let the tooth dry out
- Come to the clinic immediately

Never put a milk (baby) tooth back in.
